What Is Power Flushing & Do I Need It?

Power Flushing does exactly as it sounds. It flushes your central heating system of all the rust and black sludge that naturally occurs due to the corrosion and rusting of the inside of your radiators, valves and pipework. It  also clears any limescale and dirt from the heat exchangers in your boiler.

This is done by the introduction of an external power flushing machine, which amongst other things acts as a large pump. It is connected either accross your central heating pump valves or a radiator. Then in simple terms with the addition of chemicals and filtering, we clean and flush the water in your system. Finally we add an inhibitor to stop corrosion occuring after it is clean for many years to come.

Below are a few of the problems power flushing can alleviate:
  • Heating taking a long time to get warm - Poor circulation
  • Cold spots on radiators - Sludge accumulating at the bottom
  • Noisy boiler and/or pump - Blockages
  • Pump faliure - Overworking
  • Little or no hot water - due to blocked pipes and heat exchangers
  • Blocked radiator valves
  • Signs of corrosion
  • Constant air in radiators - due to gases produced in corrosion
Some long term benefits which are often overlooked include:
  • Lower heating bills - It costs more to heat up the sludge and dissovled solids than it does clear water
  • Increased Boiler Life
  • Increased Pump Life
  • Increased Radiator life
  • Trouble free heating when you want it
  • Fewer breakdowns

Point To Note
All boiler manufacturers now insist on a complete power flush when adding a new boiler to an existing system, or a pre commision flush when installing a completely new system. The latter is to remove any excess solder and flux before adding the boiler.
Many manufacturers will not honour any waranty if a power flush has not been done and can check by testing the water in the system.
In short, power flushing is recommended and insisted upon for a reason. Cutting costs by not doing it at installation could lead to a big headache and a big hole in your pocket in a very short time if the boiler develops a fault.

Please contact us for a free evaluation, often achieved over the phone, to see if your system would benefit from a power flush.

We would also be happy to provide a free estimate based on the type of system, make, model of your boiler and the number of radiators.

A typical system costs £350 + Vat Including all chemicals. Though this is is done as standard with every new boiler at a vastly reduced rate.
